Teenager Discovered Deceased After False Accusations of Taking Ashes
One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased just days following being wrongly blamed of taking the cremated remains of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Start
The investigation learned how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a statement presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were extremely distressing", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son told her he had entered the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could use the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing heard from educational personnel at the local secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been detained and that was the initial I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang the family's parents' landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they did not got that message.
Official Finding
Senior investigator told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was released whilst investigations continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to determine his purpose."
