Russian Drones and Rockets Strike Western Ukrainian City of Lviv in Sustained Assault
In the early hours of Sunday, the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, typically seen as one of the safest locations in the country, experienced among its most sustained assaults since the outset of Russia's comprehensive military campaign.
For five hours, Russian Shahed drones and rockets struck the urban area, situated approximately 70 kilometers from the Polish border. Significant explosions were audible from the downtown area, a designated UNESCO heritage location.
Casualties and Destruction Throughout Ukraine
Nationwide, at least five individuals were killed – four in the Lviv region and another in the Zaporizhzhia city. In addition, 14 people were injured. Included among the casualties was a teenage girl, who died along with three other family members when their residence was hit.
Part of Lviv was left without electricity, as reported by the city leader. Major blazes broke out in multiple locations, such as a industrial zone in the southern part of the urban center.
As the pungent odor of smoke and fumes permeated the city, the regional governor urged inhabitants to close their windows and refrain from venturing outdoors or to utilize protective masks or breathing apparatus.
Regional Reactions and Defense Actions
Poland's air force reported it deployed fighter aircraft and implemented defensive measures to protect its airspace after a recent incursion by deceptive unmanned vehicles. There were also numerous unmanned aircraft observations in recent days in EU countries including Denmark and Germany.
- More than 50 missiles and approximately 500 attack drones were involved in the assault.
- Weaponry included long-range guided missiles, Iranian-designed Shaheds and Kinzhal ballistic missiles.
- Several areas were affected, including Ivano-Frankivsk region, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kherson, Sumy region, Kharkiv and Chernihiv territory.
Appeal for Global Assistance
Ukrainian leadership called on international partners to strengthen air defences and to establish a restricted airspace – a step that has so far been met with reluctance.
"An independent cessation of hostilities in the air is possible – and it is precisely that which could pave the path to real diplomacy. The United States and European nations must take action to compel Putin stop," the message noted.
Over the past few days, Russia has focused on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing power blackouts in multiple regions, a strategy employed in the approach to winter for the previous three winters. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces has been target oil production facilities deep inside Russia with its own long-range drones.

The city was in the midst of the annual Lviv BookForum, with writers and attendees gathered in the urban center for a major literary events in the region.
Alongside local authors, such as literary figures Artur Dron and Julia Musakovska, there were global participants featuring UK-based award-winning poet Fiona Benson, and, joining by video link, the Booker prize-winner Bernardine Evaristo, and the Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk.
On Sunday morning, debris was still falling on the roads of Lviv, as exhausted residents emerged and participated in church services. The damaged wreckage of a Russian drone lay on a pavement outside a block of flats, cordoned off with warning barriers.
