Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals crossed the track directly in front of him

The concerning event happened on the third circuit when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"

"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be authorized to just sprint across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Official Investigation Underway

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the situation

"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority

"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send marshals were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"

"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
